Fortnite Battle Royale is massive. It’s getting more players and more fans by the day, and as its popularity soars, players are starting to ask about how the game will handle a competitive eSports scene.
If you look to other titles in the same sort of genre, you’ll see there’s a blossoming competitive community growing in the titles. Where the likes of DayZ, H1Z1 and PUBG may lack the resources to quickly implement competitive modes, Fortnite developer Epic definitely has the staff to be quite nimble in adding features.
Thanks to the lack of publicly available custom servers in Fortnite, the game’s competitive scene is currently limited to externally organised online tournaments.
That hasn’t deterred some massive eSports organisations – FaZe Clan and Team SoloMid to name a few – signing some of the biggest Fornite players in the world, though.
One of the biggest thing about instigating an eSports scene is how viewable it will be, and what the studio can do to communicate team affiliations and such.
Luckily, a few ideas are already being floated by fans: RRV_Design has made an OpTic Gaming outfit skin, complete with the team’s famous colour scheme and logo.
Rise Toxin, creative artist over at The Rise Nation, has also designed a series of weapon skins that would fit the OpTic Gaming team.
You can see these images in our gallery below – they’re a fantastic proof of concept for what the future of Fortnite’s eSports setup could be.
According to eSports specialist site Dextero, RRV_design states designs for other esports organisations are in the works: we could soon see a full suite of interesting and varied eSports-related cosmetics pitched to Epic.
Elsewhere, we’re seeing designers like T0XIN add designs to the potential pool of what we could see come out in Fortnite.
It’ll be interesting to see if Epic or Fortnite take notice of these pitches and add the cosmetics into the game soon.
We’ve already seen Fortnite add in consistent updates to the game, multiple times a week, so the decision to incorporate designs like this wouldn’t be a matter of resources, but rather willingness.
We’re keen to see where this idea goes.
This comes as Fortnite may be about to get a new mode.
The game, which has taken the world by storm over the past few months, is set to potentially get a whole new mode with the arrival of that mysterious comet.
The new mode, which you can see referenced in the tweet below from a proven Fortnite dataminer, looks like it’ll only be open to solo players – an interesting departure from the rest of the game.
It is possible this could change: Fortnite’s other limited time modes have never limited players to playing on their own before.
Event-based modes such as High Explosives or 50v50 have never imposed single-player restrictions.
The tweet basically reads “A new mode is in the game files! Impact! Only solo and probably has something to do with the comet!”
The comet – that seems to be bearing down on the Tilted Towers location – looks like it’s due to land pretty soon, and will likely shake up the way the map works.
This new mode could suggest why that will be: perhaps the comet’s coming will bring danger zones to the map, or introduce new weapon types or even new mechanics.
The datamine doesn’t hold much more information – but at least we know yet another thing is due to shake up the way Fortnite works pretty soon.
