SAN ANGELO — Exciting news for gamers. San Angelo has recently gotten a brand new gaming store.
Phat Catz Gaming opened in the former Heff’s Burgers building, 2019 N Bryant Blvd., Sept. 3, 2018. Store owner Mike Richter said he wants this to be the San Angelo gaming community’s third place.
“There’s your home, there’s your work, and then there’s us,” Richter said. “We want to give gamers of all ages a big enough space to play all of the games they like.”
Along with gaming events, they also buy, sell and trade cards and games.
“We can purchase any game or trading card from someone in exchange for cash or store credit,” assistant manager Sara Marlow said. “We also want to provide any and every card or game for our customers, so if we don’t have something in-store, we can always special order it.”

Richter said one of the features this store will have that makes it a stand-out from competitors is food and beverages.
“We’re looking to add a sandwich bar in the back gaming area and we already got the (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) process going,” Richter said. “We’re going to serve beer and wine because when you’re gaming, it’s kind of a nice thing to do to go and have some beer and wine.”
Richter said he believes this is a unique perspective that hasn’t been tried yet in San Angelo.
While waiting for clearance from health inspectors and the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, the store will sell candy, canned sodas and bottled water.
Phat Catz also will feature rooms for private gaming sessions and people who just want peace and quiet while playing with their friends and family.
The name for the business is a nod to a couple he knows. The trio had planned on purchasing a game store and naming it Phat Catz.
“So, when I was getting ready to open a store, I reached out to that husband and wife, who are now living in Florida,” Richter said.
He said he wanted to keep the name to honor them for their inspiration for San Angelo’s gaming community.
Richter said the places needed a lot of work, but his team put in long hours and hard work to clean it up.
“We got the keys on Friday afternoon … and then we turned this place around Monday morning,” Richter said. “This place needed a lot of work, but since then, a lot of our struggles had been dealing with plumbing, due to the grease leftover from the previous tenants that caused backup in the plumbing.”
Phat Catz’s location had recently belonged to Heff’s Burgers, who had been locked out because they failed to pay rent, as well as other court costs.
