iOS: Unicode-created emoji might be hot shit now, but they’re no help when you need to access more obscure punctuation marks, accented characters, and currency symbols in a document or totally witty text message. Instead of copying and pasting Internet search results for characters like an animal, use UniChar, an iOS keyboard app that puts the rest of Unicode’s more traditional characters and symbols (even Braille!) front and center when you need them.

UniChar is a third-party iOS keyboard that unlocks the wide wide world of weird Unicode characters. Service marks, copyright logos, mathematical symbols, technical signs like Apple’s “splat” icon or radioactivity indicators, and more are available in the standalone app as well as the keyboard add-on you can use wherever you need to type something.

You can add those special characters to your tweets and texts using the keyboard, but the accompanying standalone app offers a bit more functionality. If you find yourself working behind the scenes on the web and need to copy some code for special characters, you can long press a character to copy either the symbol, its Unicode code, or the HTML code needed to properly display it on the web. You can also use the “Search by Drawing” feature to look for an icon whose name or category you might not remember. It’s not always perfect, but it might jog your memory enough to give you a rough idea of what you’re looking for.

Unichar is free to download, but if you want to unlock the rest of the 18 categories of characters in the app, you’ll need to make a $1.99 in-app purchase.
